We then have quick image show from members' images before a guest of speaker and presentations before a light supper break. The meeting usually ends with either another speaker or image critique and a wrap up of the night's events.

Competition Meeting

Held on the 4th Monday of the month, monthly competitions nights are where our member' images are critiqued by a PSQ accredited Judge and assessed for Merits or Honours.

Competition nights are a valuable insight into what makes a good image, and what can make a good image great.

Meeting Format

An accredited judge will have received the images, prints and DPIs, two weeks beforehand and will have assessed the images before the meeting night.

On the night each image is displayed in turn and the judge will give his assessment of the image and will discuss why they image received the award it did. Where appropriate suggestions may be made as to how the image may be improved.

Ray Shorter

In my professional career I worked as a scientist. However retirement has allowed my passion for photography to flourish. I joined BCG in 2013 and with encouragement from other members started entering club competitions in order to improve my craft. My main interests are landscape and wildlife although I have a developing interest in fine art black and white.

I have been interested in photography for the last 8 years but for about the first 5 of those I was not really working at being a photographer. After joining BCG I really started to work on getting more out of my images. If asked to describe myself the words that I would use would be "class clown" and "competitive".

I have a passion for learning, prior to joining the club I would normally just try learn from watching YouTube and try to absorb knowledge but without an avenue to show my work. Since joining BCG I have learnt so much from watching others and benchmarking against them in order to improve. This coupled with doing a number of courses within and externally from BCG plus still watching YouTube I feel my photography has improved. So whilst on the committee, I will be doing my best to encourage others to just have a go and learn what you can from who ever but have fun doing it.

I joined BCG in 2015 to develop my interest in photography through learning how to create better images and find my own creative voice. I also saw this as something I would spend more time on when I retired. My main interest is landscape but saw the competition topics as a way to push me out of my comfort zone and develop new skills.

Before retirement I worked as a Civil Engineer, with the last twenty years based in Queensland in the mining industry. Before joining BCG in 2014, at the recommendation of the late Les Harden, my photography had been largely confined to covering our extensive travels in Australia and overseas. BCG has helped me focus on photography as an art form. My interest has been developing in Creative Photography, but covers many other areas.

I have had an interest in photography for many years and only in recent years have I taken this interest further, taking courses to learn more about my camera, and how to make it work for me. Photography allows me to capture and create and most importantly have fun and learn something new every time I head out. Joining BCG has offered more opportunities to get creative, share images and learn from each other as well as from the competition judges and guest speakers who come to club.

I am a retired Accountant and Economist who specialised in Taxation policy. I travel extensively in Australasia, Europe and North America and Travel Photography in all its forms is a keen interest. There are many fine photographers in the BCG and exposure to their work plus the many interesting external speakers who participate in the club’s program improves my skills and stimulates my interest in photography.
