International Special Interest Group

The purpose of this special interest group is to offer constructive yet targeted advice on images destined for international competitions. Included in the discussions will be suitability of the image for international competitions and how to deconstruct and improve it to give yourself the best change at gaining those elusive international awards.

All are welcome to attend. To participate in the group you need to be on the path to competing internationally. Participants are to bring along a maximum of three images, numbered in order of priority for critique. You are welcome to bring the images either as a print, on a flash drive or on your laptop. We will endeavour to get to everyone’s 3 images during the course of an evening.

Critique SIG

This general Critique SIG is ideal for members wanting feedback on images they are planning on submitting to international, national or club competitions. It will meet in the main hall and there will be a number of experienced members present to assist with the image critiques. If you're after some extra pointers and help to get the best out of your images, bring them along on a USB stick.

In previous meetings of this special interest group, we have been concentrating on how images may be processed using Photoshop and the associated Adobe Camera Raw (ACR).

We would also like to have some discussion about the aesthetic qualities of the image. What images “speak to you”? What images show some originality as well as technical qualities? When should we break the usual rules of composition? What are judges likely to say about an image?

Most of us have entered images in previous competitions and don’t feel that the judge has appreciated what we are trying to do or even have been surprised that the image has received such a high award. Perhaps you could bring along such an image to defend it and have a discussion about it.

AV SIG

Everyone interested in working on AV's this year is invited to the AV-SIG. Lets get some discussion going about how to put quality AV's together. Bring your ideas and something to write with for a great planning session. Murray Wayper will lead this SIG.

Contemporary Photography June

Monday 19

Starting at 7pm sharp – AV Special Interest Group (SIG).

The AV SIG is stepping into gear with all participants being challenged to start a MINI10 AV to present at this meeting. This is an easy start into AVs as Murray pointed out there's a story in everything, it's just the way it's told that matters.

At this meeting, we'll look at these AVs and discuss ways to refine the edits. Murray will also demonstrate how to assemble an AV using Fotomagico (for Mac but the principles are the same for Windows.) All are welcome.

Starting at 7:45pm sharp – Combined meeting of the new Street Photography SIG and the Critique SIG.

Lisa Kurtz will also be attending to critique one to two of our photos that we submit from the outing on 28 May and give us feedback and pointers. It is very important to gauge how many people would like to attend to decide on how many images people can submit for critique, bearing in mind that the meeting is only two or so hours.

In preparation for the SIG meeting, Tony Watts and Elayne Mitchelson will host an outing for the SIG Street Photography on Sunday 28 May with Lisa Kurtz attending to give advice and assistance. The meeting place is the forecourt in front of GOMA at 2.30pm. The intention is to do the West End to Art Gallery Walk. Please email Elayne Mitchelson (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) to express your interest in attending this event.

Starting at 7:30pm - International SIG

This year the format will be different – any BCG member who is interested in entering images in international or national competitions is welcome to bring along a few images to show to the group and receive critique on those images. We hope this will improve your chances of doing well in those competitions. On 19 June, the critique will be headed by award winning professional photographer Mel Sinclair, with other members of the group, some of whom have had success internationally, also being able to offer their suggestions.

International and national competitions are a very good way to benchmark your work against other photographers, have your images judged by a wider range of judges and this all helps to improve your own photography. So, we encourage you to think about entering some of these competitions, and come along to the next ISIG meeting on Monday 19 June with a few of your images.

Monday 17

Monochrome Special Interest Group

The evening will be a critique of the prints displayed with participation from the floor. Encouragement will be provided to the newer members to access the contents of the prints and encourage more entries. All welcome.

AV SIG

Murray Wayper will look at storyboards. If you have a concept for how your AV will go together but not sure how to to express it, a storyboard will help you structure your project to make it flow.
All welcome.

Next AV SIG to look at Audio

The BCG AV SIG is rolling along and we've got some great ideas in the works. We've looked at editors and storyboarding among other things and at the next AV SIG we will be looking at audio. Audio is usually the least well done in AV and makes up at least half of the production.

We'll find some royalty free music sources, voice-over sources and how (and why!) you can do your own recordings.

So come along to the next AV SIG, Monday 21 August.

The BCG Annual Competition includes AV entries which are due on 23 October, 2017.

Street Photography SIG

This Monday Evening the group will be meeting for their critique night with John Lomas.

Please send in one image to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. who will collect and present these images on the night. The theme is 'Bulimba Walkabout'. Those who could not attend that walkabout are most welcome to send in an image of their recent street walks.

All club members are welcome to the critique evening.
