Speaker After AGM is Giulio Saggin

Telling Visual Stories

My latest book, "You, The Citizen Photographer: Telling Visual Stories", translates photography into a language we all understand - the written word. Photographers use the same techniques when taking photos - visual stories - as those used when writing stories. My book is based on a presentation I gave to ABC reporters during my nine years as photo editor with ABC News Online, so there is a photo-journalism slant to my talk. That said, the message is universal and this is a whole new 'perspective' on photography.

I spend the first part of my talk explaining the message in my book, and will then show photos taken throughout my career.

BIO

Giulio started his career as a news photographer in 1989. In 1992 he headed off for Scotland with a one way ticket to Heathrow and enough money to buy a basic kit of camera gear.

At the start of 1998, after having had work published in every major Scottish and London-based newspaper, he packed up his life in Scotland and hitchhiked all the way around Australia photographing everyone who gave him a lift.

After completing his hitchhiking journey in Dec. 1998, he returned to Brisbane and began working as a freelance photographer. He also self-published ...so I did, the book of his hitchhiking journey.

Giulio joined ABC News Online in 2007 as their inaugural photo editor and, in 2011, self-published "Deep Fried Pizza", a novel about the world of news photography.
In 2016 published "You, The Citizen Photographer: Telling Visual Stories", a guide (introduction) to photography that shows how photos – visual stories – are constructed the same as written stories.
