July Outing

Saturday 22 July

Location: Hills Road, Mt Sampson (between Samford and Dayboro)

Meeting time: 7.30 pm start (or thereabouts).

Outing theme: Astrophotography

Outing registration:  Please email Ray Shorter if you are planning to come to the outing (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and also advising your mobile phone number so he can get in touch by email or phone in case the Outing is cancelled because of weather. Please also advise whether you will be going directly to the location on Hills Road or meeting him in Samford at 7.00pm.

The Outing will proceed only if there are clear skies (or nearly so) .... there is no point trying to shoot the stars if it’s cloudy.

Beginners and new members: Ray Shorter is hosting this night. You are very welcome to attend.  It'll be a great opportunity to meet other BCG members.

Directions:

From Samford, drive towards Dayboro on Mt Sampson Road. Turn right into Hills Road, about 800m after crossing Cedar Creek and after passing Jagera Court on the right. Drive up the hill and at the top, turn left along Hills Road (a good dirt track at this point) ... it is a dead-end track. Park towards the end and walk back to near the dead tree (a great foreground for light painting).

If you are unsure about the location, meet Ray in Samford Village in the parking lot in front of the Post Office and Alegria Cafe (39 Main Street, Samford ... on the left heading towards Dayboro, just before crossing the creek) at 7.00pm. We can then drive out in convoy to Hills Road.

What to bring:

• Camera with wide angle lens, or as wide as you have ... best for capturing wide sky shots and the Milky Way.
• Know how to operate your camera in Manual mode to adjust shutter speed, aperture and how to focus manually. Also, how to change ISO settings. Shutter speed – check what is the maximum shutter speed you can dial in (on my Nikon D800 it is 30 sec), in addition to “bulb” mode where you can leave the shutter open for as long as you want (with a cable release ideally so you don’t get camera movement).
• Tripod (essential), and a cable release if you have one.
• Intervalometer for taking star trail shots if you want to .... if your camera does not already have a built-in intervalometer (my Nikon D800 does). Know how to set it up, whether it is external or internal to your camera.
• Head-torch (so both hands are free to operate your gear), and a regular torch (for some light painting).
• Small notebook and pen in case you need to take notes.
• Mobile phone and calculator (in most mobile phones these days)
• Warm clothing (it could be quite chilly on a clear night) and maybe something to drink

Further Information:

On the internet, you will find many references and books on how to photograph the night sky.

One Ray has personally found very good is an e-book by Melbourne-based astrophotographer Phil Hart “Shooting Stars – How to photograph the Moon and Stars with your DSLR” ... see http://philhart.com/shooting-stars

An App that can help in planning Milky Way shots (and others) is http://www.photopills.com/.

October Outing - Hunt & Shoot

Sunday 8 October

Location: TBA

Time: 1pm

Bring: camera and as many accessories as you think you'll need and be able to carry. Pen and notepad will be handy.

Arrive by 1pm, competition starts 1.30 and will finish by 4.30

The Hunt and Shoot is designed to challenge you! You'll need to capture 12 subjects using only 24 exposures within 3 hours. It is a race of creativity, lateral thinking and ingenuity to encapsulate the essence of the subject.

Prizes:

Non-members win 1 year BCG membership
Members win the coveted Hunt and Shoot trophy, awarded at the Annual Dinner.

How it works

The twelve subjects are not known to the competitors until the day of the shoot and may be defined subjects or broad topics which require lateral thinking. Only digital cameras may be used. Participants have their first image camera number logged at the start of the event and only the first 24 consecutive image numbers may be used as part of the competition. Memory cards must be presented to the Organiser for validation and for downloading of the images onto the Organiser’s laptop no later than the nominated end time of the competition.  If you finish early "well done"!
