Shooting the Stars Astrophotography Outing

Photo

The event started on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 4:30 PM and ran to Sunday, August 12, 2018 at 12:00 AM.

One of our most popular outings, come along and be amazed at the great shots you can get with Astrophotography.

Saturday night 11th August is when the next new moon occurs with dark skies suitable for an astrophotography shoot. We need a location a bit away from Brisbane with minimal light pollution.

So, we have chosen Hays Landing Recreation Area on the shores of Lake Wivenhoe. It is about a 45-minute drive from Samford, heading west over Mt Glorious along the Northbrook Parkway. At the “T-junction” where Northbrook Parkway meets the Wivenhoe Somerset Road, turn right for about 100m and then left where the signpost says “Hine Rd” and “Billies Bay and Hays Landing”. This turns into Bryden Rd (all bitumen) and takes you to Hays Landing Recreation Area. In Google Maps, it can be found by searching for “Bryden Road, Lake Wivenhoe”.

Hays Landing Recreation Area is a well-grassed area, excellently maintained by Seqwater. There are sheltered picnic tables and gas BBQ’s close to the edge of Lake Wivenhoe.

Sunset on Saturday 11th August occurs at 5.24pm, with astronomical twilight ending at 6.43pm

So how about we start the outing 4.30 - 5.00pm, giving time to get some sunset shots over the Lake. Then, if you are so inclined, have a picnic/BBQ dinner using the gas BBQ’s provided at the site (byo food, drinks, chairs, light etc). And then by 7.00-7.15pm, it should be dark enough to start shooting the stars.

This is a weather-dependant event, so please register your intention to attend via the BCG website so we can easily contact you if the weather turns against us (logon to the website, then Program > Calendar > click on 11th August > Registration Information > Sign Up)
