Brisbane Camera Group Patron
BILL SMIT EFIAP ESFIAP PSQA
Our Patron, Bill Smit, is a distinguished member of the Australian and Queensland photographic fraternity. Bill was a foundation member of the Australian Photographic Society and the Photographic Society of Queensland. He was also a foundation member of Bidfest, the international audiovisual society based in Brisbane. Bidfest stands for Brisbane International Diaporama Fest.
FIAP, Federation Internationale de l’Art Photographique, is the world body for amateur photographic organisations. Bill has been honoured by the Federation. His distinctions are – EFIAP (Excellence FIAP) awarded for excellence in photographic skills, and ESFIAP (Excellence FIAP for Services Rendered).
Bill is a life member of Brisbane Camera Group, Queensland Camera Group and SEQACC (South-East Queensland Association of Camera Clubs).
In 1986 he was awarded a Commonwealth Medal, the highest ranking medal awarded by APS. This medal is given to amateur photographers only once in every three years, the other two years being for either professional or scientific photographers respectively.
Judging at Nationals and Internationals is another aspect of Bill’s work. He has served on five APSCON committees, and he has been guest speaker at the Photographic Society of New Zealand Convention.
Bill has run Adult Education Classes and Rural Youth Summer Schools in photography. There have been many lectures and judgings during his career. In his own photography he is chiefly a pictorialist. Interestingly, Bill ran a Black and White printing service for professional photographers for some years.
Most importantly for us, Bill is the Patron of Brisbane Camera Group, and he contributes a great deal to our club. We see him at BCG club meetings, our AGM, the Annual Dinner, interclub competitions and conventions and the Annual PSQ Judges’ Forum. He is always there for us when we need his advice and support.
